Painting with Light

Aperture: 8 ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: 30 sec Lens: 17-50mm.

Today during class we painted with light. To do this, we went into the darkroom, turned off the lights, and then made the shutter speed on the camera extremely long (30 sec). Doing this allowed us to select what part of the picture we wanted lit with flashlights. In this picture I was really trying to backlight my friend's hands, and after many attempts this is what I finally came up with. It isn't exactly what I wanted, but I think with practice it will get better. It was really fun to be able to draw designs and squiggles behind or on the subject. I think the reason I like painting with light so much is that it allows you to be more creative. One of the problems I had was accidentally either lighting myself up in the picture or flashing the light directly at the camera lens when I didn't want to. After you play with the light for a while you kind of get the hang of it though. I will definitely be painting with light in the future!!! :)

Water Balloon Palooza

                ISO: 100 Aperture: 3.5 Shutter Speed: 1/1250 Lens: 17-50mm

This picture was taken at the Water Balloon Palooza in the Texas High School practice field. This was the very fist assignment that I had ever been given, and I had ZERO experience besides attending the photography boot camp. This assignment was difficult for me to shoot because everything happened so fast. Another reason this assignment proved to be difficult to me was because everyone was huddled around in little groups. Due to this, it was very difficult to get photos of peoples' faces and reactions. However, I was very pleased with this image. I love the expression and the placement of the subject, particularly the way she is holding her hand. Another thing I like about this picture is the background. I like how the subject is in focus and that their are people out of focus behind her, although I do think that this picture could have been better if their had been more light on the subject's face.

First Headshot

ISO: 400 Aperture: 4.0 Shutter speed: 1/3200 Lens: 17-50mm

ISO: 400 Aperture: 4.0 Shutter speed: 1/3200 Lens: 17-50mm

For these pictures I was on an assignment to get a headshot for the school's online newspaper. I was told to take the pictures outside, so I decided to go out and shoot the pictures by the pond. A headshot is taken from the bust up so that is why I took them the way I did. However, their are multiple things wrong with the images I took. After taking the pictures and looking at them I noticed that my main problem was the background. In both photos I placed the subject in an area that didn't compliment the photo at all. In the first picture, there seems to be some sort of water pipe growing out of the subjects ear. After noticing this, I decided to move the subject. However, once again, I failed to pay close attention to the background. In the second picture there is an onning running through the back of my subject's head. Having the same problem twice really makes me consider the background in a photo more seriously. In the future I'll try to pay more attention to the placement of my subject.
